Symposium and forum for young scientists - Innovative and application-oriented water technology in Chengdu in 2021

The symposium and forum for young scientists on innovative and application-oriented water technology 2021 was successfully held in Chengdu from May 22nd to 23rd. On behalf of the Industrial Water Treatment Magazine and the Sichuan University (SCU), the Faculty of Architecture and Environment of SCU and the Sino-German Centre for Water and Health Research (WATCH) jointly organized this event. More than 700 experts and scientists from 130 universities, 40 research and engineering offices design institutes and companies in China took part in. In addition, live online broadcasting of the event was carried out nationwide in China, with the number of online users exceeding 10,000.

The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by Prof. Lishan Zhou from the CencerTech Tianjin Chemical Reaserch and Design Institute (CTTCRDI). Mr. Haibin Yu, Director of the CTTCRDI and Prof. Weilin Xu, Executive Vice President of the SCU, each gave a welcoming address for the event.

The plenary session was moderated by Prof. Bo Lai, Team Leader for Water Technology from WATCH at SCU, and Prof. Shengyan Pu from Chengdu University of Technology. Six well-known professors in China then gave their keynote speeches for the participants.

The event was then divided into six parallel sessions:

• Advanced purification and reuse of industrial wastewater
• Advanced oxidation technology and water treatment systems
• Modern functional materials and their applications for water treatment
• Physical separation technology and systems for water treatment
• Biological and ecological technologies for the treatment of industrial wastewater
• Special session forum for master’s candidates and doctoral candidates

About 170 young scientists shared the latest achievements in their respective research areas with the participants and started "brainstorming" in the hope of generating sparks of ideas and promoting the integration of education, research, and production, in order to develop solutions for water protection.

At the event, Dr. Zhaokun Xiong from WATCH at the SCU presented the current status of WATCH and held the lecture entitled "Technology and Pilot Plant for treating hospital wastewater by electrolysis catalyzed ozone process", which is one of the current research focuses of WATCH. His lecture received widespread attention from the participants.
